About Ratings

Sustainable Product Ratings are based on meticulous vetting by State, Federal and expert sustainable procurement authorities. You can find these ratings on the product pages to help you determine which is best for you.

Compostable (BPI)
Product or package is designed to be composted in municipal and industrial aerobic composting facilities. BPI provides scientifically based standards for compostable materials which biodegrade. When products are designed to be composted, they receive an ASTM D6400 certification.
EPA Comprehensive Procurement Guidelines for Recycled Content
Product meets or exceeds EPA’s Comprehensive Procurement Guidelines (CPG) for recyclable content standards for use of materials recovered from solid waste. Buying recycled-content products ensures materials collected in recycling programs will be used again in the manufacture of new products.
EPA Safer Choice
Product meets EPA Safer Choice standards. The program uses EPA’s chemical expertise and resources to evaluate products and label only those that have met the program’s standards of safety for human health and the environment.
FSC Certified
FSC certification ensures that products come from responsibly managed forests that provide environmental, social and economic benefits.
OMRI® Listed
The Organic Materials Review Institute (OMRI) supports organic integrity by providing organic certifiers, growers, manufacturers, and suppliers a rigorous independent review of products intended for use in certified organic production, handling, and processing.
Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI)
The SFI program's unique fiber sourcing requirements promote responsible forest management on all suppliers' lands. SFI chain-of-custody (COC) certification tracks the percentage of fiber from certified forests, certified sourcing and post-consumer recycled content.
USDA BioPreferred
Product meets or exceeds the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) biobased content requirements. Use of biobased products reduces reliance on petroleum, increases the use of renewable agricultural resources, and may contribute to reducing adverse environmental and health impacts.
BIFMA Level
Product, manufacturing facility, and company responsible for the product have been evaluated by an accredited third-party certification body against criteria of the ANSI/BIFMA e3 Furniture Sustainability Standard. Products are rated 1-3, with 3 as the highest, taking into account a company’s social responsibility, energy usage, material selection and human and ecosystem health impacts. U.S. Green Building Council recognized.
US Green Building Council
This product can help you achieve a credit within the LEED Rating System. LEED is a green building certification program that recognizes best-in-class building strategies and practices. To receive LEED certification, building projects satisfy prerequisites and earn points to achieve different levels of certification.
Energy Star
Product complies with US Department of Energy (DOE) and US Department of Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Energy Star Program energy efficiency standards. U.S. Green Building Council recognized.
EPEAT
Product meets EPEAT environmental performance criteria including reduction of environmentally sensitive materials, end of life design and management, product longevity, energy conservation, corporate performance, packaging, consumables, and indoor air quality. EPEAT Gold meets all required criteria plus at least 75% of the optional criteria. EPEAT Silver meets all required criteria plus at least 50% of the optional criteria. EPEAT Bronze meets environmental performance criteria.
FEMP Energy Efficient item
Product meets Federal Energy Management Program (FEMP) energy efficiency levels.
USDA Organic
USDA Certified Organic indicates product contents should be 95% or more certified organic, meaning free of synthetic additives like pesticides, chemical fertilizers, and dyes, and must not be processed using industrial solvents, irradiation, or genetic engineering.
Fair Trade Certified™
Fair Trade Certified™ indicates product were produced ethically. Rigorous social, environmental and economic standards promote safe, healthy working conditions, protect the environment, enable transparency, and empower communities to build strong, thriving businesses.
Rainforest Alliance Certified™
Products bearing the seal originate on--or contain ingredients sourced from--Rainforest Alliance Certified farms or forests. These farms and forests are managed according to rigorous environmental, social and economic criteria designed to conserve wildlife; safeguard soils and waterways; protect workers, their families and local communities; and increase livelihoods.
Certified B Corp
Certified B Corporations™ are for-profit companies certified by the nonprofit B Lab to meet rigorous standards of social and environmental performance, accountability, and transparency. B Lab is dedicated to using the power of business as a force for good.
Cradle to Cradle Certified™
The Cradle to Cradle Certified™ Product Standard guides manufacturers through a continual improvement process that looks at a product through five quality categories — material health, material reutilization, renewable energy and carbon management, water stewardship, and social fairness. A product receives an achievement level in each category — Basic, Bronze, Silver, Gold, or Platinum.
GoodGuide
Product is top rated in its category by GoodGuide. GoodGuide provides the world’s largest and most reliable source of information on health, environmental, and social impacts of consumer products. GoodGuide develops ontologies from over 1,000 different data sources to define what matters when assessing the health, environmental or social performance of a product or company.
UL Environment
UL provides GREENGUARD Certification for products that meet stringent chemical emissions requirements, and ECOLOGO Certification for products that meet multi-attribute, life cycle-based sustainability standards. UL’s GREENGUARD and ECOLOGO® marks are recognized and referenced in more than 900 sustainable product specifications and purchasing guidelines.
Mandatory Federal Purchating
Coming Soon: Product has been qualified for Mandatory Federal Purchasing. USDA's BioPreferred® program identifies products that are eligible for preferred Federal purchasing, and products whose biobased content has been independently laboratory tested and third-party certified.
EPA WaterSense
Product is approved by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) WaterSense program and meets or exceeds water efficiency and performance standards. U.S. Green Building Council recognized.
Low VOC
Product meets the low volatile organic compounds (VOC) standard for product categories listed in California Air Resources Board (CARB) for reducing VOC emissions from consumer products and architectural coatings. [Ref: California Code of Regulations, Title 17, Division 3, Chapter 1 Subchapter 8.5, Article 2 (sections 94507-94517) and CARB Suggested Control Measure for Architectural Coatings, Table 1.
REACH Compliance
Coming Soon: REACH is a regulation of the European Union, adopted to improve the protection of human health and the environment from the risks that can be posed by chemicals. It also promotes alternative methods for the hazard assessment of substances in order to reduce the number of tests on animals.
RoHS Compliant
Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS), also known as Lead-Free (Directive 2002/95/EC) originated in the European Union and restricts the use of six hazardous materials found in electrical and electronic products. All applicable products in the EU market after July 1, 2006 must pass RoHS compliance. RoHS impacts the entire electronics industry and many electrical products as well.
TCO Certified
TCO Certified is an international third party sustainability certification for IT products. Certified products meet all TCO Certified criteria and are tested and verified for compliance by independent, accredited third parties. This applies to environmental and product performance criteria as well as socially responsible manufacturing.
